WhatsApp has broadened its digital payment services by launching a new feature that allows users to pay utility bills directly within the app. This marks a significant step in enabling users to manage everyday expenses such as electricity, gas, water, insurance, and more through the messaging platform.
This new feature is facilitated by the Bharat Connect (BBPS) network, which supports a vast array of over 22,700 billers across 30 different categories. Users can easily navigate to the bill payment option from the WhatsApp home screen, choose the relevant bill category and provider, input their account details, and verify the bill amount before proceeding with the payment.
WhatsApp offers multiple payment options including UPI, debit cards, and credit cards for completing transactions. Additionally, users can keep track of their previous payments, view upcoming bills, and manage various accounts associated with the same service provider, all within the app.
This move positions WhatsApp as a more comprehensive digital-services platform, where users can conduct financial transactions and other routine activities without needing to switch between different applications. It reflects a broader trend of integrating messaging services with digital financial tools, as tech companies aim to streamline payments and everyday transactions within their existing ecosystems.
