The U.S. government has issued refunds totaling approximately $100 billion for tariffs collected under the trade policies of former President Donald Trump, following a Supreme Court ruling deeming a substantial portion of these tariffs unlawful. This refund represents nearly 60% of the $165 billion collected before the court’s decision. These tariffs had been a cornerstone of Trump’s trade strategy, which aimed to enhance domestic manufacturing, secure more advantageous trade deals, and bolster government revenue.
In compliance with the court’s decision, the administration has returned the collected duties to the affected companies. Despite these refunds, the federal budget deficit continues to expand, reaching $1.37 trillion in the first nine months of the fiscal year. This development underscores the ongoing fiscal challenges faced by the government despite the adjustments to its trade policy.
Amidst these developments, the Trump administration has enacted a new set of tariffs, ranging from 10% to 12.5%, targeting imports from over 80 countries, including major trade partners such as India, China, the United Kingdom, Canada, Mexico, Australia, and the European Union. These measures are justified by concerns over products linked to forced labor, according to the administration.
The introduction of these new tariffs has sparked fresh legal opposition, with a coalition of 25 U.S. states seeking to block the measures. The states argue that these tariffs unlawfully replace those previously invalidated by the Supreme Court, thus continuing legal battles over the administration’s trade strategies.
